Abstract:

Impact Sensitivity of Solid Energetic Materials: Mechanism of Initiation and Experimental Methods

The lecture gives a brief history of the origin and development of the classical method of studying the sensitivity of solid explosives to impact through drop weight tests. The main factors that affect the sensitivity are discussed. The mechanism of initiation of solid explosives by impact is analyzed. A review of modern methods for determining the sensitivity of explosives to impact (the method of the critical stress, the method of critical energy, the method of destructible shell, etc.) is presented. The derivation of the basic equations of the numerical model of the initiation of solid explosives by impact in drop weight tests, which allows the calculation of the critical parameters of initiation (Pcr. and hcr.) up to the accuracy of the experiment, is given.
